While not necessary Search Engine Marketing can help your website rank higher in organic, non-paid, search results. SEM provides a way to put your website in front of your target audience when they are searching for your products or services. It is responsible for the ads you see when you are watching a video on Youtube or when you search for a product or business. Search Engine Marketing can be used in several different ways. Seeking out quality backlinks, links from other websites that link to a specific page on your website, helps to improve your ranking in the search results. Linking to other webpages on your website within the text of a webpage helps the search engine’s crawlers navigate your website. Making it easier for the crawlers to navigate your website boosts your rankings in the search results. SEO is closely linked with SEM, Search Engine Marketing. Most forms of Search Engine Marketing are PPC or Pay Per Click. Meaning that you only pay when someone performs a search and then clicks on your ad. SEM allows you to get your business in front of your audience no matter where they are or what they are doing. Searches and video sites are the most common places your ads will appear, but websites and apps on your phone are also places ads appear. Ads are part of daily life and you can place your business in front of the millions of people that see those ads every day. Display ads allow you to present your products and services visually in search results, apps, or on other websites. Text ads appear in search results allowing you to provide the information you want to the people you want to see it. Text ads can have links to your webpages, a button to call, and more. Video ads are served when someone is watching a video on Youtube or other websites that serve video ads. Ads are served based on a person’s search and browser history, apps they use, and videos they watch. The ads are served when a person is either searching for something specific or has shown an interest in the product or service in the ad. Ads can target specific groups of people such as people under the age of 50, people with an income of more than $50,000 per year, or people who have visited your website. Using SEM in conjunction with SEO will improve your overall ranking. A website that ranks higher organically within a search has a higher chase of being shown when using SEM. The inverse is also true. A well performing ad can help the linked website rank higher in organic searches.
